All you need to know about the delivery process and options for receiving a registered mail through bpost.
At home
“Ding, I’ve got registered mail for you!” Time to grab your ID and meet your postman or postwoman at the door to sign for this important mail.
Not home? No worries! We’ll leave a notice in your letterbox before dropping it off at a nearby Pick-up point, or we’ll follow your delivery preferences.
In your letterbox or at a Pick-up point
Did you know most registered mail can be dropped right in your letterbox if you authorize your postman or postwoman? You can easily do this through the app or at your local Post Office.
Or, if you prefer, you can choose to redirect an upcoming registered mail to the Pick-up point of your choice.
Through a proxy
Got a notification that registered mail is on the way, but won’t be home? Or can’t pick it up at the Post Office?
Here’s how you can still receive it:
- Use the app to set up a digital Classic mandate for someone at home, or request a shareable Last-minute QR code
- Or fill in and print this paper postal proxy form ahead of time
- Or use the paper failed delivery notice left in your letterbox
A day later at home
Another little peace of mind bpost wants to offer you when it comes to receiving your registered mail. Through the app, you can already ask to receive an upcoming registered letter the next working day instead.
Frequently ask questions
bpost delivers during the weekend in certain cases. This depends on the type of shipment, the sender and the delivery address. Letters and registered mail are currently only delivered on weekdays.
Some senders, such as certain web shops, have agreements with bpost to have their parcels delivered to home addresses on Saturdays and Sundays.
It is therefore possible that your parcel will be delivered:
- to a Pick-up point or Parcel Locker on Saturday between 8:00 and 17:00
- or to your home on Sunday between 9:00 and 19:00
You can follow the status of your parcel via the My bpost app or Track & Trace.
Only the addressee(s) or those with a postal mandate from the addressee(s) can accept registered mail. The item is only delivered after signing for receipt and checking the ID card of the addressee(s) or postal proxy. The sender determines who the item must be handed over to.
Your registered mail remains available in the designated Post Point or Post Office for 15 calendar days. A judicial letter remains available for 8 days.
You can also pick up your registered mail by showing the barcode or mailing number. Don't forget to bring your ID card. Let us know if your postman didn't leave a failed delivery notice so that we can improve our services.
We understand how it could be irritating to have to show your ID card every time you receive registered mail. However, under the postal law (see Royal Decree of 14 March 2022 – Chapter 2 Article 9. § 1) our delivery and counter staff have an obligation to check your identity and to take a photo of an official document confirming your identity.
That is because registered mail has legal value. We therefore need to check your proof of identity to verify your identity, so we can be certain that the mail has been handed to the right person.
Valid documents other than your ID card
You can have the delivery person take a photo of another official proof of identity rather than your ID card.
Have registered mail delivered straight to your letterbox
You can also have your registered mail delivered straight to your letterbox without having to sign for it. You can activate this option in the My bpost app (as a delivery preference) or at a Post Office or Post Point – upon presentation of your ID card. You authorise bpost to deliver registered mail straight to your letterbox and you will no longer need to show your ID card or even be home at the time of delivery.
