What is an HS code?

HS stands for Harmonized System.This is a uniform system of codes used by customs worldwide to identify goods.

Each type of goods has its own HS code, ranging from animals, plants, textiles, machines, weapons, stones and metals to furniture, toys, art, drinks and chemical products.

When a shipment crosses the borders of the European Union, it passes through customs in the country of destination. For these dutiable shipments, the 6-digit HS code is required on the mandatory CN23 form. Based on the code, customs will calculate the import duties after which the shipment can be released.
